Barry Gardiner was born in Glasgow, Scotland to a doctor mother and was educated at the Glasgow High School and the Haileybury and Imperial Service College in Hertford before attending the University of St Andrews where he received a master's degree.
Although he represents a constituency easily accesible to Westminster by public transport, Gardiner continues to live in Cambridge and, together with his Brent Labour colleague Dawn Butler, is one of just two North West London MPs to claim a second home allowance.
