Discovered by fellow recording artist 'Johnny O'Keefe' in 1958, Barry performed on many Australian music programs such as Brian Henderson's 'Bandstand', Johnny O'Keefe's 'Six O'Clock Rock', The Bryan Davies Show and The Bobby Limb Show. Johnny OKeefe (1935-1978) was an early Australian rock and roll singer of the 1950s. ...
He Released six singles on Australian label 'Leedon', owned by Lee Gordon. (See Discography Below) The first being 'Don't Let Go' in 1960. His second release,'Don't You Worry 'Bout That', reached number 3 on the Sydney Top 40 in September of 1960. Two other singles are issued, but his fifth and biggest release 'Beggin' On My Knees' in 1962 reached an impressive number one. It wasn't unusual in Australia for American hits to be brought back for Australian artists to record before the original US version is released. In 1961, Barry Stanton was offered 'I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door', originally by Eddie Hodges. Barry refused, saying that the lyrics were too immiture for a man of his age to be singing. He watched in horror as the Eddie Hodges version raced up to number one in Australia. His career ended, along with many others upon the arrival of The Beatles and other British acts in 1963. He never achieved anything overseas, making him one of the many Australian rock'n'roll artists to only have sucsess in Australia. DISCOGRAPHY BARRY STANTON, vocal with chorus & orchestra.
