At the 1992 Winter Olympics he won a gold medal on the Men's 10000 Meters. Before the 1994 Winter Olympics he was so dissatisfied with the way to qualify for the tournaments that he became a Belgian. In Belgium there was (and still is) no speedskating tradition. Therefore, qualifying for the tournaments became no issue, as there were no other speedskaters to compete with. In Lillehammer (1994 Winter Olympics) Bart Veldkamp received a bronze medal in the Men's 10000 Meters for the Netherlands.
