In 2007, it was announced that the Bartercard Cup would be scrapped by the New Zealand Rugby League with more emphasis on grassroots and having regional competitions. Despite the impending demise of the competition, the passion shown by the players, most of whom are only part-timers, is still strong, as was evident in what is believed to be the longest game of rugby league ever played when the Auckland Lions (Mount Albert) took on North Harbour at Waitemata Stadium. It was 40-all after normal time and 2 further periods of extra time. The game proceeded to go on - no time limit - for another 17 minutes and 16 seconds when Mount Albert's Paul Fisahi scored to win the game for the most successful team in Bartercard Cup history. NZRL management believe that no game of rugby league has ever lasted that long, or at least certainly in modern times. Franchises | Current clubs |
