Barton is a town located in Tioga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,066.

The Town of Barton is in the southwest corner of the county.

History

The Town of Barton was established in 1824. The region was already settled in 1796 when John Shepard bought 1,000 acres (4 km²) by the current location of Waverly. The source of the town's name is uncertain.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 154.7 km² (59.7 mi²). 153.7 km² (59.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.

Part of the south border of the town is the Susquehanna River and the remainder is the border of Pennsylvania. The west border is Chemung County, New York.

The Southern Tier Expressway (New York 17) passes across the town next to the Susquehanna River.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 9,066 people, 3,568 households, and 2,383 families residing in the town. The population density is 59.0/km² (152.7/mi²). There are 3,927 housing units at an average density of 25.5/km² (66.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.10% White, 0.39% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,568 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $33,530, and the median income for a family is $39,650. Males have a median income of $30,828 versus $23,351 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,498. 10.5% of the population and 7.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

• Halsey Valley -- A hamlet on the town line in the northeast part of the town.
• Lockwood -- A hamlet by the west town line on Route 34.
• North Barton -- A hamlet centrally located in the north part of the town.
• North Waverly -- A community adjacent to the north side of Waverly
• Reniff -- A hamlet by the west town line on Route 34.
• Waverly -- The Village of Waverly is in the southwest corner of the town on the border of Pennsylvania. It is north of Sayre, Pennsylvania.
