Barton is a town located in Orleans County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,780.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 116.3 km² (44.9 mi²). 113.1 km² (43.7 mi²) of it is land and 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.81% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,780 people, 1,153 households, and 748 families residing in the town. The population density is 24.6/km² (63.7/mi²). There are 1,438 housing units at an average density of 12.7/km² (32.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.37% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 0.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,153 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.6% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.86.


In the town the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.1 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $28,797, and the median income for a family is $33,872. Males have a median income of $25,922 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,636. 15.8% of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.7% of those under the age of 18 and 17.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Barton Town, located in Orleans County, at approximately 44° 45' latitude and 72° 10' longitude, is bordered on the northeast by Brownington, on the southeast by Westmore and Sutton, on the southwest by Sheffield and Glover, and on the northwest side by Irasburg and Albany.
The Town of Barton was first granted by the legislature in response to a petition from some sixty Revolutionary War veterans in 1781 under the name "Providence" after their home town in Rhode Island, but was not chartered until October 20, 1789.
In Old English, Barton meant, "a grain or corn farm" and gradually came to be used to mean an outlying grange, or kind of demesne farm, often belonging to a monastery.
