Landmarks Barton St David is up there with London and Paris in terms of landmarks: Tootle Bridge - This ancient wonder would probably be in the river Brue by now if it weren't for maintenance work. Dreaded by bus drivers, the bridge comes into the spotlight when it is packed with spectators during the annual raft race. The Playing Field - Home of many 17-0 thrashings for the Barton St David football team until one can only guess they got relegated from the lowest division. During the summer plays host to epic cricket matches and turns into the pyramid stage once a year for the Barton Carnival. The Village Hall - Whether it be with nursery, cubs, table tennis, meetings...fun can always be found in the village hall. The hall can be rather sneaky though, at any moment it can plunge you into eternal darkness, unless someone has a 50p on them that is!
Climate Barton St. David experiences more than its fair share of severe weather. Indeed, the Met Office have placed a permanent 'severe weather warning' over the village. On occasions the wind can get so strong that garden chairs are lifted off the ground and harshly deposited on their backsides 4mm down the garden. During an infamous storm the gales were so fearsome one resident described the conditions as 'blustery'. The new building on the edge of Exeter The Met Office (originally an abbreviation for Meteorological Office, but now the official name in itself), which has its headquarters at Exeter in Devon, is the United Kingdoms national weather service. ...
During the Winter anyone who steps outdoors is at the risk of pneumonia as the lethal frosts freeze over the village and cause any poor souls enduring the eternal wait at the bus stop to step inside the shelter. On one famous winter morning a panicky local resident was overheard as saying the weather was 'nippy' whilst trying to crack the layer of ice that had formed over his pond. The Road system - Despite such interstates as High Lane, Barton Road and Mill Lane running through the village traffic jams are a very rare experience, except on occasions when a queue forms behind a tractor struggling to make it up Jarmany Hill. The village even has its own unique anti-speeding mechanism - the tight S-bend at the top of the main road through the village ensures any wannabe Michael Schumachers soon kill their speed. The Nippy Bus - The surprisingly loud noise of engine rumble can mean only one thing - the Nippy Bus is on its way. Service number 667, the Nippy Bus is a delight to ride and provides swift journies to the conurbation of Street, Metropoli such as Wincanton, as well as many other mouthwatering destinations. Even if you miss the Nippy Bus it is not to worry, as there is only a brief 90 minute wait for the next one. Cycling - Rarely does a village have such a dedicated core of cyclists as Barton St. David. No matter whether there is heavy rain, gale force winds, heat rash inducing temperatures or thick fog the Barton St. David cyclists are always doing their best to reduce the village's carbon emissions. There may be no cycle lanes but this is not necessary as there is such little traffic. The Barton St. David underground - Plans were drawn up to build an underground rail network that would be the envy of cities worldwide. It was decided that the recent influx of tourists from London needed to travel quicker between the hotspots. Stations were to be built at locations like Tootle Bridge, the Church and the Farm Shop and trains would run every five minutes to ensure the legion of pedestrians would never have to walk such horrific distances again. However the plans had to be torn up after the raffle at this year's carnival failed to raise enough money. This article is about the capital of England and the United Kingdom. ...
