His Holiness Baselios Geevarghese II is the third Catholicos of the East in Malankara, and was the chief hierarch of the Indian Orthodox Church (also known as the Malankara Orthodox Church, Orthodox Church of the East, Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Orthodox Syrian Church of the East). He was born on June 16, 1874 at Kurichi near Kottayam. Fluent in the Syriac and English languages, he was consecrated to the Apostolic Throne of St.Thomas with title Baselios Geevarghese II, on February 15, 1929. He died on January 3, 1964. His Holiness Moran Mar Baselious Marthoma Mathews II, the Catholicose and Malankara Metropolitan, was born at Perinadu in Kollam district of Kerala, India on January 30,1915, to Mr.Idiculla and Mrs.Annamma, Puthusherazhikathu Puthen Veedu.
He was ordained as Sub Deacon in 1938 by the late Catholicose His Holiness BaseliousGeevargheseII (Memory Eternal), as Deacon on May 6,1941 and as Priest on May 25,1941.
