Bash Chelik (Man of Steel) is a famous Serbian folklore tale.


According to the tale, there was a king who had three sons and three daughters. On his deathbed he made his sons swear that they would marry off their sisters to the first person who asks to marry. When one night a booming voice demanded that one sister is given to him, the two older brothers were reluctant, except the youngest who heeded his father's last dying words and handed her over. The same thing happened for the next two nights, until all the sisters were given away to mysterious strangers. The three brothers decide to go and search for their sisters to find out where they are.


Thoughout the travel, the youngest son finds love with a princess and marries her. He lives in her castle and is allowed to visit any of the rooms, except one which was binded with chains. When his wife was absent one day, he went inside and saw a man held prisoner and binded by chains. The man called himself Bash Celik and he begged for three glasses of water. When the naive prince handed it to him, the man suddenly gain his massive strength, broke the chains, flew out (he had wings) and snatched his wife away. Now the prince sets out on a new quest to rescue his wife. On the way, he discovers that his sisters were married to the Lords of Dragons, Hawks and Eagles. The Lords decide to help him and give him advice. Together with all this, the prince recues his wife and kills the evil Bash Celik.
