Encyclopedia > Basil Kovpak

Father Basil Kovpak, an excommunicated priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, is the founder and current head of the Traditionalist Catholic Society of Saint Josaphat, which rejects some of the decisions of the Second Vatican Council, as well as the Catholic Church's position on ecumenism and interreligious dialogue. It also opposes use of the Ukrainian language in the liturgy as opposed to Church Slavonic and insists on preserving some Latin Rite practices that have been adopted within this Eastern Rite Church. These practices include Eucharistic adoration, the Rosary, the Stations of the Cross, and several other Latin-Rite practices. The Society is closely affilliated with the Society of Saint Pius X and draws much of its funding from SSPX chapels in the West.
