Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Basil Poledouris credited two influences with guiding him towards music: the first was composer Miklós Rózsa, the second was his Greek Orthodox heritage. Poledouris was raised in the church, and used to sit in services, enthralled with the choir's sound [1]. At age 7 he began piano lessons, and eventually enrolled at the University of Southern California to study both film and music. Several short films to which he contributed still reside in the university's archives. At USC he met directors John Milius and Randal Kleiser, with both of whom the composer would later collaborate. In 1985, he scored Flesh & Blood for director Paul Verhoeven, again establishing another ongoing collaboration. Born on 21 August 1945 in Kansas City, Basil Konstantine Poledouris started his musical career as a child prodigy, learning to play the piano at seven, going on to win several prizes.
Being a member of Greenpeace and the Cousteau society, Poledouris got a special kick out of scoring films with an ecological theme (like WIND or FREE WILLY) as his first and foremost criterion to score a film, was to able to relate to it.
Basil Poledouris passed away on 8 November 2006, after a long battle with cancer.

Both names are well recognized especially within Asian cinema and the addition of Basil Poledouris helped to garner a little more attention for the film in the West.
