Basildon is an industrial town and district in EssexEngland with a population of around 101,000 (1994 est). The town is located roughly 30 miles (50 km) east of London and 12 miles (19km) southwest of Chelmsford. It is the administrative centre of the Basildon district
Basildon was created as a new town in 1949 from the merger of several smaller towns, and expanded to accommodate overspill population from London. Basildon railway station was opened in 1974 and the town is now part of the London commuter belt.
Basildon's main industries include chemicals, clothing, printing, engineering, tobacco, and alcohol.
