The Miracle

The basilisk sometimes walks as a biped. Basilisks have the unique ability to "walk" on water and, because of this, have coined the title as "The Jesus Lizard" with religious connotations to the biblical passage of Matthew 14:22-34. On water, the basilisk can run at a velocity of 1.5 metres (5 feet) a second for approximately 4.5 metres (15 feet) before sinking on all fours and swimming. A biped (//) meaning two feet (Latin bi = two + ped = foot) is an animal that travels across surfaces supported by two legs. ... Walking on water is one of the miracles that the Gospels attribute to Jesus. ...

Habitat

They are generally found in Latin America, anywhere there's a body of water (usually from Central Mexico to Ecuador). Although it has recently been introduced to Florida.

Basiliscus was the brother of Empress Aelia Verina, the wife of Emperor Leo I (457-474).
By the mediation of Verina, Basiliscus obtained the imperial pardon, and was punished merely with banishment to Heraclea Sintica, in Thrace.
Basiliscus ordered the death of Patricius, as the officer was a natural candidate to overthrow the new emperor; as a consequence, Verina later intrigued against Basiliscus, because of her lover's execution.
