Bass (IPA /bæs/) is a name shared by many different species of popular game fish. The term encompasses both freshwater and marine species, many of which are native to North America and surrounding waters. Largemouth bass can usually be found in large structures, such as submerged logs or rocks. The largemouth is known to be one of the best "fighters" and a ferocious predator attacking just about anything that moves. Largemouth have even been known to eat ducklings and baby alligators. The world record largemouth bass was caught near Jacksonville, Georgia on June 2, 1932 by George Perry. It weighed 22 pounds 4 ounces and was caught from an oxbow lake off the Ocmulgee River called Montgomery Lake. This is one of the most sought-after records in the fishing world. The white bass of the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi Valley and the yellow bass of the lower Mississippi region are also in this family; both reach a maximum size of 45 cm (18 in) and a maximum weight of 2.3 kg (5 lb).

Often confused with smallmouth and spotted bass, it is easily distinguishable because the upper jaw extends beyond the rear edge of the eye.
The strong weedy taste of bass caught in some waters may be eliminated by skinning the fish and salting and peppering the fillets before battering.
Unlike the largemouth, the spotted bass has scales on the base portion of the second dorsal fin; its first and second dorsal fin are clearly connected, and its upper jaw does not extend past the eye.
