Bass Coast Shire is a Local Government Area in Victoria, Australia. It is located in the south_eastern part of the state. It includes the towns of Cowes (and the rest of the popular tourist destination, Phillip Island), Inverloch and Wonthaggi. It has an area of 859 square kilometres. In 2001 it had a population of 24,500.
Along the Atlantic coast as far north as Cape Cod is found the common, or fl, sea bass, a sluggish bottom fish averaging 6 lb (2.7 kg) in weight and 18 in.
The white sea bass of the N Pacific, however, is a member of the Sciaenidae family (see croaker).
The Pacific sea basses include the giant sea bass, or Pacific jewfish, a bulky bottom fish that reaches a weight of 600 lb (270 kg) and a length of 7 ft (2.1 m), as well as the 2-ft (60-cm) kelp and sand basses.
Large-scale housing and resort-style developments proposed for the BassCoast near Inverloch may be blocked because of concerns over a lack of public consultation and their environmental effects.
The amendments to the BassCoast Strategic Coastal Planning Framework were passed at a BassCoastShire Council meeting on February 16 by four votes to three in front of a packed public gallery of about 80 people.
BassCoastShire councillor Loretta Leslie, who voted against the amendments, said the late amendments had come as a shock to the community.
