Deon Rexroat of Anberlin.

A bass player (bassist) is a musician who plays a double bass or electric bass (also referred to as bass guitar). Certain musical genres tend to be associated with each of these instruments. Since the 1960s, the electric bass is the standard bass instrument for rock and roll, jazz fusion (and occasionally other forms of jazz), heavy metal, country, reggae and pop music. The double bass is the standard bass instrument for classical music, Bluegrass, and Swing-era and Bebop-era jazz music. However, there are exceptions in both cases. Some 1990s and 2000s rock, pop, and punk rock/psychobilly bands use a double bass, such as Barenaked Ladies, Two Tons of Steel, Tiger Army, The Living End, HorrorPops occasionally. Some composers of modern art music use the electric bass in a chamber music setting, and some jazz big bands use electric bass. Bass guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (3706 words)
Bassists trying to emulate the sound of a double bass will often pluck the strings with their thumb, and use their fingers to anchor their hand and partially mute the strings (partially muting the strings creates a short, "thumpy" tone for the notes which mimics the sound of an upright bass).
While the influential bassist Jaco Pastorius and many with him preferred to pluck them very close to the bridge for a bright and sharp sound, many prefer the rounder sound they get by plucking closer to the neck, mostly near the neck pickup.
Tony Levin, the bassist for King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, pioneered the use of wooden dowels affixed with velcro to the tips of the index and middle fingers and used to strike the strings of the bass.
