Bastrop County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 57,733. Its county seat is Bastrop6. Bastrop is named for the Baron de Bastrop, an early German settler. (See List of Texas county name etymologies.)

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,320 km˛ (896 mi˛). 2,301 km˛ (888 mi˛) of it is land and 20 km˛ (8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.84% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 57,733 people, 20,097 households, and 14,771 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km˛ (65/mi˛). There are 22,254 housing units at an average density of 10/km˛ (25/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 80.24% White, 8.79% Black or African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 7.60% from other races, and 2.15% from two or more races. 23.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 20,097 households out of which 35.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.50% are married couples living together, 10.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 21.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.23.


In the county, the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 31.30% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 10.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 105.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.80 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $43,578, and the median income for a family is $49,456. Males have a median income of $32,843 versus $25,536 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,146. 11.60% of the population and 8.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.40% of those under the age of 18 and 13.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
