The Basutoland Congress Party (also rendered as Basotho Congress Party, is a pan-africanist and left-wing political party in Lesotho, led by Molapo Qholeba. The party won a ladslide victory at the 1993 legislative elections, and its leader Ntsu Mokhehle became prime minister. Mokhelele left the party in 1997 with his faction to form he Lesotho Congress for Democracy. At the last elections for the National Assembly, 25 may 2002, the party won 2.6 % of popular votes and 3 out of 120 seats. A political party is a political organization that subscribes to a certain ideology and seeks to attain political power within a government. ... BCP and other opposition leaders were arrested, opposition parties were banned, and the constitution and parliament were suspended.
A second attempt by senior members of the BCP to oust Ntsu Mokhehle from leadership of the party prompted a constitutional crisis in June 1997, and the creation by Mokhehle of a new political party, the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD).
The results were contested by the BCP and the runners-up in the election, the Basotho National Party (BNP), though they were declared free and fair by both the Lesotho Independent Electoral Commission and by international observers.
