Encyclopedia > Batmunkh Gompa

In the Philip Reeve's Mortal Engines, Batmunkh Gompa is an Anti_Traction stronghold and city. It is also known as the City of Eternal Strength. It is connected with the mighty Shield Wall which surrounds the territories of the Anti-Traction League and it guards the only pass through the mountain chains and swamps. Hundreds of Traction cities have been destroyed during the first centuries of the Traction by the powerful guns of the Shield Wall. Batmunkh Gompa is also a static city which is home to the League's Northern Air Fleet. It is a beautiful and ancient city. In the book Mortal Engines, Thaddeus Valentine infiltrates the city and destroys the Northern Air Fleet so that the Traction city London could invade League territory. Batmunkh Gompa is located in the Himalayas, and bears many similarities to Nepalese culture. It is known for its beautiful ceramic temples, furniture and prayer wheels.
