The Battle of Amelia Springs was a minor engagement in Appomattox Campaign of the American Civil War that was the immediate prelude to the Battle of Namozine Church. On April 5, 1865, Confederate cavalry under Fitzhugh Lee and Thomas L. Rosser assaulted a division of Union calvery led by John Crook as they were returning from burning Confederate wagons in Painsville. The running fight started just north of Amelia Springs and was fairly inconclusive. Losses are estimated at 250 combined on both sides. As it turns out one of the items burnt in the wagons was the war diary for the Army of Northern Virginia [1].
