In the ensuing unique battle, the Confederate artillery without infantry support tried to hold against the Union cavalry. They had been ordered to hold the station until Gen. Robert E. Lee arrived, but were overwhelmed and abandoned three trainloads of supplies meant for Lee's army. Custer burned these supplies; as he was doing so, a counterattack by some other Confederates failed.
