The Battle of Buffington Island, also known as the Buffington Island Skirmish, took place on July 19, 1863, during the American Civil War in Meigs County, Ohio. It was the largest battle in Ohio during the war. It contributed to the capture of the Confederate raider, Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan, who was seeking to escape across the Ohio River at a ford opposite Buffington Island. Delayed overnight, he was almost surrounded by Federal cavalry next day, and the battle ended in a rout. Morgan and some 1,200 men escaped, but the raid finally ended in his capture at Salineville on July 26. Morgan's Raid was of little military consequence, but it did spread terror among much of the population of southern and eastern Ohio. The Battle of Corydon took place July 9, 1863, in Harrison County, Indiana during Morgans Raid in the American Civil War. ...
