After having lost Busan, the Court in Hanseong (present-day Seoul) placed their hopes in a prominent general, Sin Lip, who had earned much recognitions for his successes against the Mongolians in the north. The Korean force, although a cavalry division, was poorly trained, and consisted of rookies. There are disputes between historians on whether the tactics that he imployed were disasterous or the best. Many other Korean generals argued on setting a defense on the Choryang Pass, but this attempt on the rocky and steep path failed as the entire army was a cavalry division. Therefore, Sin Lip lined up his cavalry division, consisting of new recruits, along the river. The rice paddies and the river not only covered the Korean lines' flanks and the rear, but also encouraged the soldiers to fight and withstand the fearful sound effects of the Japanese guns -this Chinese classic strategy is called bae-soo-jin (in Korean). Although fighting on a flat plain seems reasonable, the various vegetations that grew there at the time actually hindered troop movements. General Konishi, having arrived on the scene first, decided to go without Generals Kato or Kuroda (as they had gone around the whole region). He led his division of some 17,000 thousand troops and confronted General Sin Lip's 8,000 cavalry division directly. His infantry being able to travel through the Choryang Pass, Konishi attacked. Already outnumbered by more than two to one, Sin Lip's cavalry was defeated until the rice paddies turned red, and Sin Lip and Kim Yau-Mool fled to a Buddhist temple. From there, they headed to Tan-Kem-Dae and jumped off the river. Sin-Lip (ì 립) (ç³ç ¬) lived from 1546 to 1592, and was a Korean general during the Seven-Year War (ìì§ìë) (壬辰åäº).
