Eugene led an Imperial army from the Tyrol into Northern Italy. Crossing neutral Venetian territory, Eugene outmaneuvered French marshal Nicolas Catinat at Carpi in Emilia. Catinat was replaced by Villeroi. When Eugene moved northwest into Lombardy, Villeroi attacked him at Chieri on September 1, 1701. Eugene occupied a strong position.
