The Battle of Gisors (1198) was fought in Normandy, Gisors, between Richard I of England and Philip Augustus of France. The conflict started after the truce between the two kings came to an end. Richard advanced through France by capturing several castles, most notable, the castle of Curcelles and Burris. The French King tried to recapture the Curcelles as he marched from Mante with 300 Knights and a gathering of footsoliers. The two forces met, after the Frankish army — which was superior in numbers — changed directions and advanced towards Gisors. The English defeated the French and captured many prominent Knights. The French fled the field by the crossing of a bridge that broke down under their weight, and with the French King struggling for his life as his troops managed to pull him out of the water.
