The Battle of High Bridge was fought on April 6 and April 7 of 1865 between the Union army of Ulysses S. Grant and the Confederate army of Robert E. Lee. Confederate forces attempted to destroy several bridges behind them as they crossed a river, but union forces extinguished the blazes. They then attacked Confederate forces, and Lee was forced to flee a town before he had a chance to resupply. Grant proposed that Lee should surrender, but he rejected this proposal.
