A contingent of Spaniards, having fought a skirmish with American landing forces near Siboney on June 23, had retired to their lightly entrenched positions at Las Guasimas and repulsed American and Cuban raids. The Battle of San Juan Hill was the bloodiest and most famous battle of the Spanish-American War.
Lawton's division, which was supposed to join the fight early on July 1, did not arrive until noon on July 2, having encountering unexpectedly heavy resistance in the battle of El Caney.
The battle was the climactic scene of the 1997 film Rough Riders starring Tom Berenger as Theodore Roosevelt and Gary Busey as General Wheeler.

On June 30, partly due to the vacancy created by the contraction of a fever by Brigadier General Samuel Young, and partly due to the regiment's service at Las Guasimas, Colonel Wood was given a field promotion to Brigadier General with 5th Corps, and Lt. Col.
Due to exigencies of terrain, Roosevelt and other officers were forced to abandon their mounts for the operation at San Juan, or "Teddy's charge up San Juan Hill," as it was reported in the American press.
Joined by other units, notably elements of the 9th and 10th Regulars (African-American "buffalo soldiers[?]"), the Rough Riders assaulted and eventually succeeded in securing the region, contributing to the victory of Santiago, which was probably the defining battle of the Cuban campaign.
