After occupying the city of Van in May, the Russians moved their main army to the fortress town of Malazgirt. The Russians were preparing for an offensive into the Turkish heartland and Malazgirt was the perfect location to launch it from[citation needed]. The Turks were determined to strike at the Russians before they could lanch their offensive, so on July 23 the Turks began a bombardment of the town. On July 26 the Russians launched an infantry assault on the Turkish positions outside Malazgirt, but were repulsed. Between July 28th and 30th the Turks launched assaults on the Russians in the town, but the attacks were beaten off by Russian machine gun fire. The Turks finally took the Fortress of Malazgirt on August 1 and so the Russians retreated from the town. Turkish cavalry harassed the retreating Russian forces, capturing or destroying all the Russian transport.

The battle of Malazgirt allowed the Ottoman army to return to the Lake Van area. The Turks suffered about 6,000[citation needed] casualties at Malazgirt and the Russians 7,000 [citation needed].
