The Battle of Marietta of the American Civil War was fought from 9 June through 3 July of 1864 in Cobb County, Georgia between Union and Confederate forces. The battle began when the Union forces, led by Major General William Tecumseh Sherman, encountered Confederate forces led by General Joseph E. Johnston, entrenched near Marietta, Georgia. Sherman forced Johnston to withdraw partially on June 18 to protect his supply lines, but the Union forces were not fully victorious until 3 July.
