Picard Maneuver

Within the fictional Star Trek-universe, the Picard maneuver consists of going to the fastest warp speed possible, reversing, and then stopping. This creates the illusion that a starship is in two places at once, therefore causing the enemy to be lost and confused long enough to defeat them. The move was originated by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, when operating the USS Stargazer. Picard was able to destroy the craft through what was henceforth known as "the Picard Maneuver": the Stargazer made a short warp jump toward the Ferengi ship, outrunning the light of the image of itself at its former location. The Ferengi were momentarily distracted by what appeared to be a second ship coming out of warp, providing the Stargazer with enough time to destroy the enemy vessel. The Battle of Maxia resulted in the loss of the Ferengi ship and all of its hands as well as crippling damage to the Stargazer; the crew abandoned the ship without scuttling her in lifeboats and shuttlecraft and were recovered ten weeks later. After the loss of the Stargazer, Captain Picard was court-martialed but cleared of wrongdoing. The "Picard Maneuver" became required reading for Starfleet academy students. Amongst the Ferengi losses was Daimon Bok's son. After his death Bok became obsessed with gaining revenge on Picard for his son's death to the point of mental instability. This mental illness was recognized by his fellow Ferengi because he became motivated by desire for revenge rather than desire for profit, as Ferengi norms dictate. Off-camera, staff members began to jokingly refer to Patrick Stewart's habit of tugging down his shirt as he stood up as the "Picard Maneuver".
