The Battle of San Mateo occurred on the 25 July 1812 in San Mateo, Venezuela and resulted in the Royalist victory of Juan Domingo Monteverde against the forces of Francisco de Miranda. Miranda was forced to surrender and sign a ceasefire which the Spanish general Juan Domingo Monteverde did not honor, sending Miranda to prison where he would die in 1816. Monteverde killed thousands of Patriots afterwards, including some supporters among women and children. The battle also effectively ended the First Republic of Venezuela and Simon Bolivar would later hold the view that Miranda's surrender was equivalent to treason.
