Having heard of the fall of Port Arthur on January 2, 1905 General Alexi Kuropatkin, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian armies in Manchuria attempted to regain the intitiative from Field Marshal Marquis Iwao Oyama the Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese armies in Manchuria. Knowing that General Nogi's Third Army, which besieged Port Arthur, was advancing from Port Arthur to the front, Kuropatkin hoped to attack the Japanese armies to force them back to Korea. In an all-out attack, the Russian Second, Third and First Armies, totaling 300,000 men, advanced against the Japanese First, Second, and Fourth armies which totaled 220,000 men. Despite the viciousness of the Russian attack, Kuropatkin failed to recover the strategic initiative and his failure to drive the Japanese back, with his heavy loses, further lowered the Russian morale.


Total Russian casualties in the two-day battle totaled around 20,000 killed, wounded or captured. Japanese casuatlies totaled around 9,000 killed, wounded or captured. But the battle ended in a tactical stalemate with neither side claiming victory. This further led to the Battle of Mukden. A casualty is a victim of an accident, injury or trauma. ... A second Russian counter-offensive, the Battle of Sandepu, fought from (25 January 1905 to 29 January [1905])) was likewise unsuccessful.
The battle opened with the Japanese 5th Army attacking the left flank of the Russian forces on 20 February 1905.

In his orders for the battle around his stronghold there is no word of counter-attack, - and his central mass, the special weapon of the cornmander-in-chief, he gave over to Bilderling and to Zarubayev to strengthen the defence in their respective sections or posted for the protection of his line of retreat.
A state of equilibrium was established, only momentarily disturbed by Kuropatkin's offensive on the Sha-ho in October, and by the Sandepu incident in the winter, until at last Oyama fought a battle on a grand scale and won it.
The battle of Sandepu (Heikoutai), fought in a terrible snowstorm on the 26th and 27th of January 1905, came near to being a great Russian victory.
