The Duke of York and Vice Admiral Comte Jean II d'Estrées planned to blockade the Dutch in their home ports and deny the North Sea to Dutch shipping. The English and French fleets put in at Solebay to refit. On 7 June the Allies were caught by surprise and got into disarray when the Dutch fleet suddenly appeared on the horizon. The French fleet, whether through accident or design, steered south followed by Banckert's fifteen ships and limited its action to long-distance fire. HMS Solebay (D70) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (509 words)
She was named after the Battle of Solebay which took place in 1672 between an Anglo-French force and the Dutch Navy during the Third Anglo-Dutch War.
Solebay was intended to join the 19th Destroyer Flotilla of the British Pacific Fleet, but the war against Japan ended while Solebay was working up in the Mediterranean, and so she returned to Home Waters.
Solebay was positioned in the middle of her sister-ships Cadiz and Corunna.
