The battle of Vergas was fought between Maniots and the Egyptians under Ibrahim Pasha. On the 26th of June the Egyptian army had made it up to Diro in Mani. All the men were absent fighting the Ottomans in the Greek War of Independence. During the night the Maniot women dressed themselves in black and armed themselves with sickles attacked Ibrahim's sleeping army. When the Egyptians saw the Maniots they thought they were devils and they started fleeing to the beach. In the end the battle ended in a massacre as the destroyed 2/3 of the Egyptian army.
