Encyclopedia > Battle of the Herrings

Battle of the Herrings, the name applied to the action of Rouvray, fought in February 1429 between the French (and Scots) and the English, who, under Sir John Falstolf, were convoying Lenten provisions, chiefly herrings, to the besiegers of Orleans. Clermont adopted his tactics to an unexpected move, and he ordered his men to hold back. While that was happening he brought his crossbowmen and light artillery to bonbard the English laager. The context of this battle was integrated with the English in 1428-29. France was the relieving force and was based in Blois. They were under the command of Charles de Bourbon, comte de Clermont. Lent was approaching, during which fish was the diet. In February, they reached the village of Rouvray. The French column Clermont stopped the van. All of the army remained except for the gunner and crossbowmen, and deployed small-caliber cannon. This battle opened as a most unusual encounter for battles fought during the Hundred Years' War. A rash action by the leader of Scotland, managed to bring disaster to victory. After seeing the disarray of the French and Scots, the English recognized the moment to send his few men out in counter attack. During the Short time, the French army that was supposed to liberate Orleans was completely destroyed. Lent - LoveToKnow 1911 (1305 words)
Both at Rome and Constantinople, therefore, the actual fast was but thirty-six days.
How severely strict medieval abstinence was may be gauged from the fact that armies and garrisons were sometimes, in default of dispensations, as in the case of the siege of Orleans in 1429, reduced to starvation for want of Lenten food, though in full possession of meat and other supplies.
The battle of the Herrings (February 1429) was fought in order to cover the march of a convoy of Lenten food to the English army besieging Orleans.
CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Joan of Arc (3539 words)
Her attitude was always fearless, and, upon 1 March, Joan boldly announced that "within seven years' space the English would have to forfeit a bigger prize than Orléans." In point of fact Paris was lost to Henry VI on 12 November, 1437 -- six years and eight months afterwards.
It was probably because the Maid's answers perceptibly won sympathizers for her in a large assembly that Cauchon decided to conduct the rest of the inquiry before a small committee of judges in the prison itself.
She is said, when the judges visited her early in the morning, first to have charged Cauchon with the responsibility of her death, solemnly appealing from him to God, and afterwards to have declared that "her voices had deceived her." About this last speech a doubt must always be felt.
