After the Mongols captured his capital of Vladimir, Yuri fled across the Volga northward, to Yaroslavl, where he hastily mustered an army. His forces were completely exterminated, however, and Yuri II died in the battle, which inaugurated two centuries of the Mongol domination of Russia.
