Many of Fiji's leaders have been natives of Bau. Seru Epenisa Cakobau, the Vunivalu from 1852 to 1883, was the first to unite all of Fiji's disparate tribes under his authority and was crowned Tui Viti (King of Fiji) in 1871. It was Cakobau who ceded Fiji to the United Kingdom in 1874. A descendant of his, Ratu Sir George Cakobau, also held the Vunivalu title and served as Governor-General from 1973 to 1983.
