Bayboro is a town located in Pamlico County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 741. It is the county seat of Pamlico County6.


Geography

Bayboro is located at 35°8'39" North, 76°46'15" West (35.144229, _76.770751)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.9 km˛ (1.5 mi˛). 3.8 km˛ (1.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.34% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 741 people, 301 households, and 198 families residing in the town. The population density is 194.6/km˛ (502.6/mi˛). There are 340 housing units at an average density of 89.3/km˛ (230.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 46.69% White, 51.15% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. 1.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 301 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.5% are married couples living together, 24.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.97.


In the town the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.8 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $26,563, and the median income for a family is $35,769. Males have a median income of $23,750 versus $19,196 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,709. 28.5% of the population and 22.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 48.3% of those under the age of 18 and 17.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
