Founded in 1941 by Charles Bradley Templeton (1941 - 1948), an itinerant evangelist, under the Nazarene denomination. Services began in a large stone church on Avenue Road, with approximately 112 people in attendance. The church was eventually named The Avenue Road Church. Rev. J.D. Carlson (1948 - 1951), a former American evangelist, took over from Charles Templeton. In 1950 the church became affiliated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance, which began a strong emphasis on missions within the church. Tozer's books have ministered in many languages to millions of Christians. Rev. Kenn Opperman (1963 - 1970), a missionary leader emphasized the needs of the mission field in new and innovative ways: he later returned to Bayview Glen Church in 1992-1993 to provide leadership on an interim basis after Reimer's resignation. The Rev. Dr. Nelson J. Annan, D.Min. (1994 - 2006) led the church into two morning services, the completion of our building and the birthing of our daughter church - Summit Community Church, Richmond Hill, ON, Canada, under the direction of Rev. Gerry Gould. Rev. Annan's tenure in Bayview Glen included the creation of a third service (Higher Ground) that takes place at 11:15am in the gymnasium, with a cook providing bacon and eggs in the Higher Ground cafe. Since his arrival, the facilities in Bayview Glen have been opened up a lot more conventions and fellowship gatherings. Annan resigned by the end of April 2006 and got accepted as a Senior Pastor in Harvest Hills Alliance Church, Calgary, AB, Canada. Summit Community Church's leading pastor Gerry Gould's father the Rev. Robert "Bob" Gould, a long time missionary in Thailand, has taken over as the Interim Teaching/Preaching Pastor.

As of 2006, the Board of Elders restructured the senior pastoral post forming a leadership triad: The Lead Pastor (LP), The Teaching/Preaching Pastor (TPP), and The Administrative Pastor (AP). The search is currently in progress for a LP, with Bob Gould as the Interim-TPP, and the Rev. David Loucks as the AP.

Today, Bayview Glen Church is one of the pre-eminent evangelical churches in the Toronto area, and one of the largest Christian and Missionary Alliance congregations in Canada. It has 2 main services in the morning: the Contemporary Service (at 9:15am), and the Traditional Service (at 11:15am). There is a third service (Higher Ground) that takes place at 11:15am in the gymnasium, with a cook providing bacon and eggs in the Higher Ground cafe.

Highway 242: One Journey, One Purpose

This is the ministry that caters to single-digit aged to older, single individuals. A highway is a device that brings travellers together and facilitates their journey. That is precisely the goal of HWY 242, to bring spiritual travellers from all these ages alongside each other and to offer assistance and support in their individual and collective journeys. Highway 242 gets its "242" title from Acts 2:42-47:

"(42)And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. (43)And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. (44)And all that believed were together, and had all things common; (45)and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all, as every man had need. (46)And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, (47)praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved."

Highway 242 is divided into 5 major subdivisions

1. Exit56 (Gr. 5-6)

Exit56 is a place where anyone in Grade 5 & 6 can come and experience a fun, vibrant, community of their own. Exit 56 meets in the Gym of the church building. It includes large group activities that are intentional to the topic of the day, interactive learning to get across the main points, and age/gender small groups to help foster relationships and relate the message to their life.

2. Road Crew (Junior High)

Jr. High and life in general is a lot like a road trip… you journey through it trying to get to some sort of final destination. Unfortunately most people don’t know where they are going or why they exist. In fact the Bible tells us that most people are on the wrong road all together. It is our desire to direct the Jr. High students in our community down the right road. We want to fill the narrow road with students who are discovering who they are in Christ and fulfilling the purposes they were created for.

3. Oasis (Senior High)

Oasis is the weekly programme for the High School Ministries at Bayview Glen Church. Join students from across the Toronto area for a diverse blend of activities and meaningful worship experiences. Driven by students and fueled by creativity and relevance, Oasis focuses on different issues that speak to the life of high school students. 4. Impact (youths ages 18-24)

A group of college and university-age people that come together weekly where God can have an Impact on us, we can Impact each other, and then be equipped to go out and Impact the world for God wherever we go. We’re a casual group with a welcoming, open door policy – anyone can come. We pray, grow and learn together – and we have fun along the way.

5. Fusion 4:12 (young adults ages 24-35)

Fusion 4:12 is a Tuesday night small group bible study for young career and professionals between ages 24 and 35. Refreshments begin the evening at 7:15 p.m. followed by a time of prayer, video bible study, and discussion. Come join us on a Tuesday night, and for any of the many social events, movies, dinners, and games nights planned throughout the year.

Praise and Worship

Bayview Glen has teams who lead worship on alternate Sundays in the 9:15am services. Musicians range from middle school to parenthood ages. Team members that have played together for many years have enhanced worship practice sessions and have also enjoyed themselves in their devotion to the Lord. Music is meant to glorify God-Soli Gloria Deo.

Some musicians who've volunteered a lot of their time in serving the Lord through music on the platform since the formation of the 9:15am contemporary service were members of the Merge Band (discussed in the next section), Nelly Shin, Bruce McGregor, Andrew Brubacher, Anis Aywaz, Gary Lindblad, Stu & Cheryl Kinsinger, Jaclyn Foster, Dave Gast, Mark & Lor Bebbington.

In the 11:15am traditional service, George Arnold, Jr. has led the choir through his service in the organ and piano.

From 2003-2006, Merge was a service that took place every Sunday @ 6:30pm for the young adults (18-30). When it folded on 30/4/2006, Refresh was formed and debuted in October 2006: it is held on every last Saturday of every month. The Merge Ministry (2003-2006) was formed in Bayview Glen Church by former Youth Pastor Jerven Weekes who later became Senior Pastor of Rosewood Park Alliance Church, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. The ministry was to bring together members of various Christian denominations within the ages of 18-30 to worship the Lord through contemporary music. Curt Legiehn led the Merge Band for years since the age of sixteen with his older twin sisters Andrea and Erica providing back-up vocals. The Merge Band underwent many changes with Curt and Matt C. being the only constant members in all those years of ministry. Some of the early notable members of the Merge Band who volunteered much of their time in their service were Curt, Matt C., Ben A., Matt L., Ted. Merge came to a close on 30 April 2006, just before the Merge Band was to go on a missions trip to Accra, Ghana under the leadership of Pastor Jerven Weekes (in May). The missions team included band members consisted of Curt, Matt, Ben P., and some assistants--Danielle, Elizabeth Man, Bek Lazarski, and Ashley Graham. It was an experience when many Ghanians gave their lives to Jesus Christ from the Merge Band serving. The missions trip members later departed with some members called to different ministries. This missions trip to Ghana was reported to even have changed the lives of the members who went to Africa. By this time, Curt's sister Andrea dropped out of back-up vocals to teach in Germany; her twin Erica, on the other hand, continued being a back-up on a periodic basis. is the 120th day of the year (121st in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar. ... Though the Merge Band did not have the Merge Ministry anymore, Curt and the Band were given the benefit to carry on the legacy of Weekes's outreach to the young adults by leading worship on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. It was now nicknamed "The Porter Band", after current drummer Ben Porter for being the only incumbent member to be the first to tie the knot in July 2007. After October 2006, bass player Matt left the band, to be replaced by Dan (who had already been the primary bass player in Bayview Glen's worship teams for the past two and a half years. On November 2006-April 2007, the Band's members consisted of college/university undergraduate and graduate students: Curt (Ryerson), Ben (Tyndale Seminary), Dan (York), Dan later graduated from York University and left Bayview Glen for graduate studies right after becoming recognised a member of the church. He was replaced by Adriel (U of T) as the Band's new bassist from May 2007. [All participants were born in Canada; the only exceptions to this are Matt L. The Merge Ministry was a service led by the volunteering, non-professional Merge Band (which consisted of volunteers). As a result, no CDs or singles were ever charted in any all-time list of sort by the Merge Band. There were a few members of the Band who went on to become professional musicians under different labels, but the Merge Band never went professional in public and remained a ministerial serving group to this day.

Though the Merge legacy lived on in its outreach for the young adult population, the Merge Ministry was, however, over. Former co-director of Merge, Jeff McIntosh, later formed Refresh Worship Toronto which began in October 2006. This time, Curt, and Ben (on the congas) led devotional-led music. It is held every last Saturday of each month at the moment. Chris provided support to n areas of ministerial help, and Dan provided help in sound and song-powerpoints. Refresh is a new monthly Christian worship event for ages 18-30 at Bayview Glen Church. This is will be an encouraging time of uplifting modern worship music, biblical teaching and fellowship. It is a time where followers of Christ across all denominations in the greatly diversified metropolitan Greater Toronto Area and regions surrounding it who could join in the bond of fellowship, love, prayer, and worship! Picture Role Name Description
Founder/Organiser/Teacher Jerven & Sarah Weekes (Artium Baccalaureus) Jerven was born in Montserrat, grew up in Montreal, QC, and studied to be a pastor in SK. He succeeded Rocky Dundas (who is now at Summit Community Church) as the Youth Pastor of Bayview Glen Church in 2003 and founded the Merge Ministry with the audio-visual aid of Jeff "J-Mac" McIntosh (director & founder of Merge's successing ministry Refresh Worship Toronto) where he preached to a congregation comprised of 18-30 year olds. His wife Sarah (native of Northern Ireland) will later give birth to his first child just before he became the Senior Pastor of Rosewood Alliance Church, Regina, SK, where he started his pastoring in May 2007. The Merge Ministry folded and was converted into Refresh Worship Toronto by J-Mac. The only members of the Merge Band to be credobaptized by Jerven were Curtis and Daniel.
Leader (Singer)/Rhythm Guitar (I) Curtis Legiehn*** Curt is a social worker in training in Ryerson University who began his worship leading ministry since the age of 16 (youngest age of a Merge Band member). He got credobaptized in Bayview Glen Church on 6/6/2004--the last Merge service of the 2003/2004 season. His devotion to worship led him to write songs which one of them - Your Love Is Inescapable - was sung in a 9:15am service: the words touched the band members as well as the congregation. Upon the Merge Ministry's folding, he became the worship leader for the devotional Refresh Worship Toronto ministry. The Merge Band legacy lives due to Curt's background as the only remaining original member. He is currently a member of the Allen Froese Band. [1]
Back-up Vocalist Andrea** & Erica Legiehn*** (Artium Baccalaureus) The older twin sisters of Curt and graduates with a BFA in Music and a B.Ed. from York and U of T respectively. They devoted years helping their brother with back-up singing and occasional keyboarding in regular worship services and the Merge Ministry. Andrea later backed down to pursue teaching in an international school in Germany, while Erica continued being part of the band on alternate Sundays.
Image:.jpg Leader (Singer)/Piano (II) Jen Hurrell*/** In the months when Curt was unavailable for leading worship, Jen was brought as a fill-in who did most of the Sunday Merge services in the 2005/2006 season.
Image:.jpg Lead Guitarist (I) & Back-up Vocalist(s) Ben & Lisa Allison** Ben was one of the original members of the Merge Band. He possibly was the best lead guitarist and back-up vocalist who served for the Merge Ministry. His enthusiasm and his stage-presence set the tone for other members of the team and the congregation to feel the music being sung and played. He later married his wife Lisa (who'd occasionally do back-up vocals during the Merge Ministry years) and left the Merge Band to participate in different ministries.
Image:.jpg Drummer (I) Ted Kinsinger** Ted was one of the original members of the Merge Band. A self-taught drummer played in Merge for years, his double-pedal bass drum kick became a way of making the worship songs he played to carry a more rock-like tone. Married to Kelsey and with a son Jackson, Ted later left Bayview Glen Church pursuing a different ministry for the Lord.
Bass Guitarist (I) Matthew Carlson** Matt C. is the first and longest serving bass guitar player for the Merge Band who drove miles every Sunday to play for the Merge Ministry outreach. He went to Ghana on May 2006 for a missions trip and became the penultimate original member to leave the Band in October 2007.
Image:.jpg Drummer (II) Matthew Lindblad** Matt L. was one of the original members of the Merge Band. Born in California, U.S., he is the first-known Band member to be a heterochthonous Canadian. He arrived in Canada for high school, served in Merge as the drummer (the congas player if Ted was drumming). He left the Merge Band midway in the 2004/2005 season for California. [2]
Image:.jpg Keyboardist/Pianist (I) Eva Kwok** Eva's the first keyboardist/pianist for the Merge Band in their first season in 2003/2004. After this, she left for East Asia to pursue studies and participate in different ministries.
Image:.jpg Keyboardist/Pianist (II) Jaclyn Foster** (D.C.) Jaclyn's the first-known autochthonous Canadian member of the Merge Band to be born outside of Ontario, [in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador]. She served as the pianist and keyboardist in the 9:15am Bayview Glen Church services as well. A graduate of CMCC, she later left the Merge Band after the 2004/2005 season to participate in different ministries.
Rhythm/Lead Guitarist/Drummer Graham Legiehn* Graham's a cousin of Andrea, Erica, and Curt who was credobaptized by former Youth Pastor Rocky Dundas in 2001. A "freelancer" who would be a fill-in at any time, he's a student in Laurier. He would be the lead guitarist when Ben A. was not available. When Merge folded and Refresh started, Graham played the congas in Ben P.'s absence.
Image:.jpg Back-up Vocalist Shauna Weir*/** (Artium Baccalaureus) Shauna served as a back-up vocalist for a short time. She later left the Merge Band to focus in other ministries. She's a graduate of Waterloo with a double major in Sociology and Music.
Drummer (III) Benjamin Porter*** (Artium Baccalaureus) Ben P.'s a self-taught drummer and 2nd-known autochthonous Canadian member of the Merge Band born outside of Ontario [in Saint John, New Brunswick]. Holder of a double-B.A. in Psychology & Sociology from Atlantic Baptist University, he came to ON as a Tyndale Seminary M.Div. in Biblical Counselling student. He arrived in the Merge Band as the 3rd drummer when Ted Kinsinger was unavailable. On Sunday Merge Ministry services, when Ted drummed Ben was on the congas. He had been a steady, precise drummer for the 9:15am services in Bayview Glen and later on took the role as the principal drummer of the church and for the Merge Band. He also participated in the missions trip to Ghana on May 2006. He continued being a supportive individual for the formation of Refresh Worship and played the congas for it. He is to marry his longtime girlfriend-now-fiancée Christina in NB on 07/07/07. [3]
Bass Guitarist (II) Daniel Thambiraj** (Artium Baccalaureus) Dan's a self-taught bassist and second-known Merge Band member to be a heterochthonous Canadian. Born in England, U.K. and a third-culture kid, he schooled in a British prep school and an American school in Singapore. He finished high school in Canada and completed undergraduate studies in York with a B.A. in History. He served as Bayview Glen's principal bass player for the 9:15am services since May 2004 and was a Youth Leader since September 2004 to April 2007. He got credobaptized on 26/2/2006 in Bayview Glen. His debut in the Merge Band was 23/5/2004 (as a sub), but officially became 2nd bass guitarist for the Merge Band in November 2006 for 6 months. He left the Band in May to go to graduate school. He's an avid lover of Handball, history, theology, and apologetics.
Image:.jpg Back-up Vocalist Danielle Rivet*** Danielle's a 2006 graduate of IADT in Audio Engineering. She never played an instrument in the Band but has been a key back-up vocalist since 2005. She was originally part of a set-up team who got everything ready for the Merge Ministry services until her talent of singing propelled her to lead worship when Curt and Jen weren't available at one point. Since then, she's been a back-up singer, who travelled with the Merge Band members to Ghana in May 2006. She does back-up singing on a periodical basis and got credobaptized in Bayview Glen Church on March 2007.

Refresh Worship Toronto started in October of 2006 by a group of young adults at Bayview Glen Church to fulfil the need for a Christian community for the 18-30 demographic in the G.T.A.. It succeeded The Merge Ministry that lasted for approximately three years. From October 2006 to May 2007, Refresh ran a once a month worship night lead by the young adults at Bayview Glen Church. Each event included modern Christian worship music, a guest speaker with a relevant lecture topic and plenty of food and social time afterwards for friendship building. Each event was very successful with anywhere from fifty to hundred people showing up from many different churches and communities in southern Ontario such as Markham, Scarborough, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, and even Cambridge! Be encouraged that God has been blessing this ministry with his provision and wisdom and has been working in the lives of those who attend. As Refresh continues to grow, so does its leadership and its involvement with the churches and communities around it. As of May 2007 Refresh changed from a Bayview Glen Church ministry into a joint church ministry with Unionville Alliance Church and The Bridge Church. The Refresh leadership feels that by switching to a combined church effort this will establish a stronger ministry which will further reach the needs of the young adult community in the GTA that would not have been possible by doing it alone.

As of July 2007 a new component to the ministry will be added called Reconnect. Reconnect will be a once a month social or outreach event to offset the limited time present after the Refresh worship nights. Together both the Reconnect social night and Refresh worship night will build a greater sense of community within the ministry as we gather twice every month with times of worship, teaching, encouragement, socializing and outreach.

This is an encouraging time of uplifting modern worship music, biblical teaching and fellowship. It is a time where followers of Christ across all denominations in the greatly diversified metropolitan Greater Toronto Area and regions surrounding it who could join in the bond of fellowship, love, prayer, and worship!

Bayview Glen's Creed

Bayview Glen Church adheres to the Creed/Statement of Faith of the Christian & Missionary Alliance in Canada denomination. This is the most up-to-date version as approved by the General Assembly in Calgary, AB, in 2000.

1. There is one God (Is. 44:6, 45:5-6), who is infinitely perfect (Mt. 5:48; Dt. 32:4), existing eternally in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Mt. 3:16-17, 28:19; 1 Jn. 5:7).

2. Jesus Christ is true God and true man (Phil. 2:6-11; Heb. 2:14-18; Col. 2:9). He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary (Mt. 1:18; Lk. 1:35). He died upon the cross, the Just for the unjust, as a substitutionary sacrifice, and all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood. He arose from the dead according to the Scriptures (1 Cor. 15:3-5; 1 Jn. 2:2; Acts 13:39). He is now at the right hand of the Majesty on high as our great High Priest (Heb. 4:14-15; 9:24-28). He will come again to establish His kingdom of righteousness and peace (Mt. 25:31-34; Acts 1:11).

3. The Holy Spirit is a divine Person, sent to indwell (Jn. 14:16-17), guide, teach and empower the believer, and to convince the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment (Jn. 16:7-11; 1 Cor. 2:10-12).

4. The Old and New Testaments, inerrant as originally given, were verbally inspired by God and are a complete revelation of His will for the salvation of people. They constitute the divine and only rule of Christian faith and practice (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pt. 1:20-21).

5. Humankind, originally created in the image and likeness of God (Gen. 1:27), fell through disobedience, incurring thereby both physical and spiritual death. All people are born with a sinful nature, are separated from the life of God, and can be saved only through the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:8; 1 Jn. 2:2). The destiny of the impenitent and unbelieving is existence forever in conscious torment, but that of the believer is everlasting joy and bliss (Mt. 25:41-46; 2 Thess. 1:7-10).

6. Salvation has been provided only through Jesus Christ. Those who repent and believe in Him are united with Christ through the Holy Spirit and are thereby regenerated (born again), justified, sanctified and granted the gift of eternal life as adopted children of God (Tit. 3:5-7; Acts 2:38; Jn. 1:12; 1 Cor. 6:11).

7. It is the will of God that in union with Christ each believer should be sanctified thoroughly (1 Thess. 5:23) thereby being separated from sin and the world and fully dedicated to God, receiving power for holy living and sacrificial and effective service toward the completion of Christ's commission (Acts 1:8). This is accomplished through being filled with the Holy Spirit which is both a distinct event and progressive experience in the life of the believer (Rom. 12:1-2; Gal. 5:16-25).

8. Provision is made in the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ for the healing of the mortal body. Prayer for the sick and anointing with oil as taught in the Scriptures are privileges for the Church in this present age (Mt. 8:16-17; Jas. 5:13-16).

9. The universal Church, of which Christ is the Head, consists of all those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, are redeemed through His blood, regenerated by the Holy Spirit, and commissioned by Christ to go into all the world as a witness, preaching the Gospel to all nations (Eph. 3:6-12, 1:22-23). The local church, the visible expression of the universal Church, is a body of believers in Christ who are joined together to worship God, to observe the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, to pray, to be edified through the Word of God, to fellowship, and to testify in word and deed to the good news of salvation both locally and globally. The local church enters into relationships with other like-minded churches for accountability, encouragement and mission (Acts 2:41-47; Heb. 10:25; Mt. 28:19-20; Acts 1:8, 11:19-30, 15).

10. There shall be a bodily resurrection of the just and of the unjust; for the former, a resurrection unto life (1 Cor. 15:20-23); for the latter, a resurrection unto judgment (2 Thess. 1:7-10).

11. The second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is imminent and will be personal and visible (1 Thess. 4:13-17). As the believer’s blessed hope, this vital truth is an incentive for holy living and sacrificial service toward the completion of Christ's commission (1 Cor. 1:7; Tit. 2:11-14; Mt. 24:14, 28:18-20).
