The Bear River Mountains are a branch of the Wasatch Range located in northeastern Utah and southeastern Idaho. It is a popular area for both winter and summer activities, expecially camping, hiking, rock_climbing, snowmobiling, and skiing. Popular areas include the Beaver Mountain ski resort, Tony Grove, and numerous caves. The Sinks are popular for snowmobiling. One of the sinks, known as Peter's Sink, recorded the lowest temperature in Utah on February 1, 1985, at -69°F (-56°C), which is also the second-lowest temperature ever recorded in the Lower 48. Logan Canyon is the only major route through the mountains, which is accessed by U.S. Highway 89. The highest point in the Bear River Mountains is Naomi Peak, at an elevation of 9,980 ft (3,042 m), located in the Utah portion in Cache County.
The BearRiverMountains, the northernmost extension of the Wasatch Range, which reach as high as 10,000 feet, cover the eastern half of the county.
On the western edge of the county lies the Wellsville Mountains and on the eastern edge lie the BearRiverMountains, both northern branches of the Wasatch Range.
Taking up the land between the Wellsville and BearRiverMountains is Cache Valley, a relatively flat valley traversed by the BearRiver and dotted with small farm towns in the west and the larger, more urban, and faster-growing ares in the east, along the benches of the BearRiverMountains.
