Bearded tit numbers recorded in East Anglia during the 1991 breeding season were remarkably low.
The former grazing marshes separated by a network of dykes quickly reverted to luxuriant reed and were soon colonised by the bearded tits.
Within a dozen years, however, what appeared to be a miracle occurred and more bearded tits were breeding in Britain than had been recorded for more than a century.
