Encyclopedia > Beatrice Dalle

B atrice Dalle (born December 19, 1964) is a French actress.

B atrice Dalle was born in Brest, Finist re, France as B atrice Cabarrou (see note below). She was married to Jean-Francois Dalle but is now divorced.

She was working as a model when she met filmmaker Jean-Jacques Beineix. Beineix cast her in the lead role in the 1986 film 37 2 le matin (later released in the United Kingdom and United States under the title Betty Blue). She went on to appear in a series of major roles in French films.

She made her debut to American audiences in Jim Jarmusch's Night on Earth in 1991. In 1997, she was cast in The Blackout, her first film made in the United States. The film itself was a commercial failure. It also had personal consequences for Dalle who was arrested for cocaine possession during the filming. (She had previously been arrested for drug possession and shoplifting in France.)

She was cast to play opposite Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense in 1998. However, she lost the part when she was denied a work permit as an "undesirable immigrant" because of her arrest record.

She was arrested again in 1998, when she assaulted a meter maid in Paris who had issued her a ticket for parking in a handicapped space. Dalle was given a suspended sentence and placed on probation. 1998 also saw the break up of Dalle's engagement to actor Alessandro Gassman when he unexpectedly married another woman.

In 2001, Dalle appeared in the controversial film, Trouble Every Day, in which she played a cannibal.

Note - There are conflicting references to Dalle's birthplace. The majority of sources state she was born in Brest, Finist However there are also a number of sources which state she was born in Le Mans, Sarthe.
