Beats, Rhymes and Life is the fourth album of hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest. Released in 1996, it followed three years after the highly regarded and successful Midnight Marauders. Unfortunately for the group, the critical response for this album was not as positive, with many seeing the album as bland and lacking in the energy that characterized previous releases from the trio. The album was also the first to feature production work from The Ummah, which was composed of Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jay Dee. One topic on this album was the Death Row vs. Bad Boy rivalry. This album also features Consequence frequently on the album, which made many fans think he was a new member. Image File history File links Beats-Rhymes-and-Life-Cover. ... Beats, Rhymes and Life - A Tribe Called Quest - Song Listings (608 words)
With their fourth album Beats, Rhymes and Life, A Tribe Called Quest manages to be one of the few hip-hop acts to successfully age by pushing both their music and their lyrics into new directions.
Stylistically, the record is closest to its immediate predecessor, Midnight Marauders, in the sense that the group's jazz-rap fusion are downplayed and the beat stays surprisingly hard throughout the album.
What distinguishes Beats, Rhymes and Life from Marauders is a deeper sense not only of eclectism, but of spirituality and maturity.
