The town was named after Montillus (Montillion), Murray "Old Man" Beatty who settled on a ranch in the area at the end of the 19th century. He was Beatty's first postmaster when it opened on January 19, 1905. He died in December 1908. Beatty is home to the Beatty Museum and Historical Society (open 10-4) at 417 Main Street. The Death Valley Nut and Candy Company located on the north end of town bills itself as the World's Most Beautiful gas station. It is located between the Motel 6 and the Stagecoach motel/casino. Beatty is the nearest town to the Yucca Mountain facility (18 miles to the east), and houses Bechtel Corporation's visitor center for the site (as the site itself is in restricted-access land).
