The borough was formed in 1965 from the greater part of the boroughs of Barking and Dagenham which were transferred to Greater London from Essex.
Transport in the borough is provided principally by the District Line of the London Underground which passes through the borough west to east with stations at Barking, Upney, Becontree, Dagenham Heathway and Dagenham East.
Barking is also served by the Hammersmith and City Line and by c2c, one and Silverlink National Rail routes.
