The town of Bedford is located 86 km south of Montreal and right by the border with the state of Vermont (USA). Seated in the Saint-Lawrence lowlands, at the beginning of the steep leading to the Appalachian moutnains, the Rivière aux Brochets (Pike river) flows in its middle, separating the town in two, the south and north parts.
Origin of the name This name was given by Loyalists who new numerous Bedfords in the former colonies that they lived in in the United States. The name may have also been given in tribut to lord John Russell, 4e duke of Bedford (1710-1771), English politician and secretary of near by area(1748-1751) or governer general of Ireland 1756 à 1761.
History The first settler arrives in 1812.
Demography About 25% of the population is anglophone, thse families being settled there after the coming of the Loyalists in 1776.
Parishes Activities Every year since 1828, at the beginning of August, the town holds its annual fair, the oldest of its kind in Quebec and the second oldest in Canada. One can play hockey, curling or figure skate at the Centre sportif.
