The current railway station is a sorry affair of a single platform with a bus shelter. The current station site is relatively new - formerly, up until 1984, the station was situated further to the east and was a terminus for the line from Bletchley. The decision was then taken to demolish that dilapidated structure and rebuild a basic station on the curve that linked the Marston Vale line to the Midland station, thereby making a connection between the two lines at Bedford, which had been lost since the Varsity Line lost its through trains in the 1960s. The connection between the Marston Vale and Bedford Midland station runs over the route of the former Hitchin branch, which until its closure in the 1960s crossed the Varsity line by means of a flat crossing. Varsity Line (or Oxford and Cambridge Line) is an informal name for the railway service which formerly linked the university cities of Oxford and Cambridge, operated by the London and North Western Railway and then British Railways. ...
