Encyclopedia > Bedhead

Bedhead was a Texas-based indie rock band active in the 1990s (1991-1998). Their first album, WhatFunLifeWas, is often cited on critic's lists as one of the best indie albums of the 1990's. Bedhead's music was generally subdued, with a polyphonic sound based on the interlocking of single-line melodies played by three electric guitars and one electric bass guitar (often played with a capo), nearly always using clean (undistorted) tones. The group's vocals were often delivered in such a low key manner that they were quite difficult to decipher. This unusual sound was dubbed by some critics as "slo-core," referring to the slow tempos of many of the band's songs, a label to which band members objected in interviews. In reality, many of the group's songs do not remain slow and quiet throughout, instead beginning very slowly and quietly and gradually building in intensity and volume. Bedhead also experimented with unusual time signatures, with some songs in 6/8 or 3/4 meter. Near the end of Bedhead's existence, however, the group had veered away from their earlier sound in favor of a faster, louder, and more distorted (i.e. more typical rock and roll) sound.

In 1999, a year after the breakup of Bedhead, Matt and Bubba Kadane went on to form a band called The New Year, whose style is quite similar to that of Bedhead. 1999 (MCMXCIX) was a common year starting on Friday, and was designated the International Year of Older Persons by the United Nations. ... Salon | Sharps and Flats: Bedhead (500 words)
And Bedhead are indeed punks, just as much as the Velvet Underground were when they bravely launched the less-is-more approach with "Sweet Jane." It's a tactic many a rock band have tried -- and failed -- to emulate, but "Transaction de Novo" emerges as a rare success.
Bedhead's first two full-length albums, 1993's "What Fun Life Was" and 1996's "Beheaded" were measured and articulate but louder, the brilliance of many of their songs built on the slow, glorious rise of guitar noise, five-minute trips from silence to feedback-drenched cacophony.
Slowed down, Bedhead are able to capture the beauty of their surroundings.
