"Bedtime Story" was a collaboration of sorts between Madonna and Icelandic popstar Bjork. A fan of Bjork's solo work, Madonna harbored intentions of working with her, although Bjork declined the opportunity of working with the megastar, instinctively feeling such a thing would be wrong. The "Bedtime Stories" album producer, Nellie Hooper (also responsible for co-production of Bjork's solo work) asked Bjork to contribute to the Bedtime Stories sessions, leading to her contribution of a song she especially wrote for Madonna, that would ultimately become the album's title track. Even for a Madonna dance record, the song is rather unconventional. A minimal trance backing is used, making the song quite difficult to dance to and the lyrics deal with a journey into the subconscious, not material we would expect from a popstar of Madonna's popularity, though with her penchant for adopting subcultural sounds not entirely unexpected. Though not a mainstream success in the US (it was the first Madonna single to not reach the Top 40), the song was a top ten success in markets such as the UK and Australia, as well as being a hit with dance fans, re-establishing Madonna's connection with the club world. Issued as the third single from the Bedtime Stories album, the song received full remix treatment. Alongside the single edit of the song, a number of dance remixes were comissioned, including two by Junior Vasquez, rumoured to be Madonna's favourite dance music producer of the time. Continuing with the unexpected, the outstanding video, directed by Mark Romanek, premiered as an MTV special, where Madonna read a bedtime-story inside a club to a select audience of lucky invitees (all dressed in bedtime and clubkid wares). The video was, at the time, rumoured to be the most expensive video ever made (comments suggesting the budget had reached $2 Million. As recently as 2005, the Mark Romanek directed video has been screened in contemporary art galleries, and is now widely considered to be a masterpiece of the medium.
