Encyclopedia > Beecher, Michigan

Beecher is an unincorporated community located in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a Census-designated place (CDP) used for statistical purposes and has no legal status as a municipality. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 12,793.


The CDP area is situated at the southeast corner of Mount Morris Township where Interstate 475 turns westward between the cities of Flint and Mount Morris. A small portion is also in the southwest corner of Genesee Township.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 15.3 km˛ (5.9 mi˛). 15.3 km˛ (5.9 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,793 people, 4,476 households, and 3,280 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 834.4/km˛ (2,159.8/mi˛). There are 5,002 housing units at an average density of 326.2/km˛ (844.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 28.01% White, 65.96% Black or African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.92% from other races, and 3.41% from two or more races. 3.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,476 households out of which 39.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.6% are married couples living together, 33.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% are non-families. 22.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.27.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 34.3% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.0 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $25,925, and the median income for a family is $26,500. Males have a median income of $29,150 versus $21,870 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $13,484. 30.3% of the population and 25.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 45.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
